WASHINGTON — Rep. Betty Sutton wants to take the rust out of the rust belt.

The Democratic congresswoman from Copley Township brought a panel of Ohio experts to Capitol Hill Wednesday to describe how pre-emptive efforts to fix corroded roads, bridges and other infrastructure could create jobs and improve safety in Ohio and the nation.

“When a bridge rusts away and collapses or when water mains break, filling our streets with water, we’ll read about corrosion, but by then it’s too late,” said Sutton, who has cosponsored bills that would promote anti-corrosion technology and require states to prepare corrosion mitigation and prevention plans for bridges before they’re built.
