House GOP Will Retain Term Limits for Committee Leaders

A bid to loosen term limits for the top Republicans on House committees has been dropped, Minority Leader John A. Boehner told his members Wednesday morning.

“The rule will stay in place as it is,” Boehner, R-Ohio, said at the House Republican Conference’s weekly meeting, aides said after the session.

The upshot of Boehner’s announcement: If the GOP gains control of the House after November’s election — a prospect they now say is realistic — the top Republicans on many committees would have to relinquish their positions in 2013 when they hit the party’s three-term limit for serving as chairmen and/or ranking minority members.
