If the White House thought its call for a bipartisan health care summit next week would put even a small dent in the hypercharged partisan rhetoric that has marred this process since Day 1, well, it thought wrong.
Less than a week after President Barack Obama announced his plans for the Feb. 25 televised summit during a pre-Super Bowl interview with CBS News’ Katie Couric, the head of the Republican Study Committee posted an op-ed piece that pooh-poohed the event as nothing more than a thinly disguised bid by the president to use the White House “as a political tool to intimidate his way into a government takeover of health care.”
“The American people and Republicans in Congress will not be taken by this Chicago-style politics,” wrote U.S. Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., who heads this group of 110 House Republicans dedicated to the advancement of conservative economic and social causes.
