The U.S. hockey team assured itself a chance to play for a medal when it downed a pesky Swiss team 2-0 on a third-period deflection goal by New Jersey Devils left wing Zach Parise.

The Americans had to overcome strong goaltending by Anaheim Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller, who made 42 saves. The Americans didn’t truly wrap it up until Parise scored into an empty-net with 11 seconds remaining.

The victory puts the USA into a Friday semifinal match-up against either Finland or the Czech Republic. If the USA wins that game, it would play for the gold medal on Sunday. If it loses that game, it would play for the bronze medal on Saturday.
