`Green police’ chief gets boot over spending

The Miami-Dade police official who directed a highly controversial environmental crime fund has been stripped of control over the pot of public money amid disclosures it bankrolled items having nothing to do with the environment.

Division Chief Frank Vecin was relieved of supervision of the Community and Intergovernmental Affairs Bureau, the office in charge of the Florida Environmental Task Force Trust Fund.

The questionable spending has included flat-screen televisions, pricey laptop computers, DirecTV subscriptions, and SUVs for command staff and — for a time — Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez.
