It’s not about guessing which schools will make the tournament or where they’ll be seeded. It’s the combination of analyzing the bracket based on knowledge and tournament wisdom, using some basic statistics and following hunches. When they work in accordance, it can be very lucrative. Let’s just say my 2005 bracket finished in the top 100 out of more than 1 million entries on ESPN.com and the top 50 out of more than half a million on CBSSports.com. My 2007 bracket swept my office pools and was nearly as successful nationally.

What I hope to do here is give you a little advice – some strategic value as you fill out your brackets this week. I’ll mostly use simple analysis of numbers that are fairly easy to find and common sense. I won’t give you my bracket, but perhaps I can help navigate some trouble spots.

All of my statistics are based on the last 25 tournaments, when the field first expanded to 64 teams.
