The Ford Motor Company said Monday that its chief executive, Alan R. Mulally, was paid $17.9 million in 2009, a 5 percent increase, as the automaker posted its first profit in four years.

Mr. Mulally’s compensation rose largely because of an increase in stock awards, even though he took a 30 percent cut in salary, to $1.4 million, for 2009 and 2010. He received stock awards worth $11 million, more than double what he received in 2008. His total compensation last year was 19 percent less than in 2007, his first full year at Ford.

Ford’s executive chairman, William Clay Ford Jr., earned stock and option awards worth $16.8 million last year, according to the company’s preliminary proxy statement. But he will not receive that compensation until “the board determines the automotive sector has achieved full-year profitability,” a spokesman, Mark Truby, said.
