The NFL owners, who are meeting in Orlando, Fla., have passed a proposal on a 28-4 vote to modify overtime in the playoffs, according to multiple media reports Tuesday afternoon.

Such a rules change needed 24 votes for ratification. Starting next season, if a team wins the coin toss and then kicks a field goal, the other team gets the ball for its own chance to score.

It’s the first change in playoff overtime rules in the NFL in 52 years, ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio says.

Dan Kaplan, reporting for Sporting News’ sister publication SportsBusiness Journal, posted a tweet stating the owners will meet again in May to discuss overtime changes from just the playoffs to regular-season games.
