Crappy Pell provision holds up health care

Using one of those gigantic magnifying glasses available only in the Sky Mall catalog, Senate Republicans managed to find flaws in the health-care bill that compelled Senate Parliamentarian Alan Frumin to send the bill back to the House for another vote.

According to the AP, the Democrats’ bill, which nationalizes the student loan industry, also made it impossible to cut Pell grant disbursements. Writes the AP, “Democratic aides said the problematic provisions deal with protecting students from future cuts in their grants if Congress does not provide enough money for them. They violate budget rules because they do not produce savings, one aide said.” Translated into studentese, this means Uncle Sam will give you money for school until he can’t, at which point you need to start working doubles at the smoothie bar or selling your plasma, because you won’t be able to get that money from a private lender.
