Everybody who thinks Michael Steele is under fire because he’s black, raise your hand

Besides you, Mike.

Embattled Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said he won’t resign despite calls for him to step down amid reports of the group’s excessive spending, adding that he and other African-American leaders such as President Obama have a slimmer margin of error because of their race.

“The honest answer is, ‘yes,'” he said on “Good Morning America” today. “Barack Obama has a slimmer margin. A lot of folks do. It’s a different role for me to play and others to play and that’s just the reality of it.”

Seriously? The margin of error is slimmer for black politicians? Voyeurgate would’ve been swept under the rug if the head of the RNC had skin of a different color? Really?

It’s easy: Waste a bunch of money that people have donated to your political party. When they complain about their money being wasted, call them racists. Then, when donations dry up, that’s due to racism as well.

Pathetic. Although the White House’s response is equally galling:

“Well, I think that is a fairly silly comment to make,” White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters today. “I think Michael Steele’s problem isn’t the race card, it’s the credit card.”

A rebuke of identity politics and a call for fiscal responsibility. Who knew Robert Gibbs was a closet teabagger?
