This bodes (not?) well:

Embattled Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele will hold a conference call with all 168 members of the national committee today, the latest sign that he is working to rally support in the wake of a staff shakeup earlier this week.

RNC communications director Doug Heye described the call as routine but the circumstances surrounding it — Steele has been under fire over an expenditure made by the committee at a risque night club — are anything but ordinary.

Those close to Steele insist resigning is simply not an option he is considering and, to date, no major national figure within the party has gone public with a call for him to do so. Consultant Alex Castellanos, who was brought in late last year to help the RNC communications shop, did say Steele should step aside on Tuesday night, however.

If Steele did reverse course and resign, there is broad consensus that Jan Larimer, the non-controversial and well-liked vice chairwoman of the RNC would step in.

Just getting hammered, Steele is.
