Cannes: Do the French Harbor a Grudge?

Are the French not over the whole Freedom Fries thing yet? Out of the 47 films in the official selection of the Cannes Festival, announced today, only six are American. (Seven, if you count Woody Allen’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, which was produced in Spain and the U.K.)

Only one—Doug Liman’s Fair Game, about the Valerie Plame scandal—is screening in competition. This comes after last year’s slap-in-the-face slate, which was equally light on U.S. fare.
