Britain’s skies were still effectively a flight-free zone today with just a handful of flights operating in the north of the country.
Skeleton services operated from Scotland and Newcastle this afternoon but aviation officials scrapped tentative plans to reopen the rest of the country’s airspace as a new ash cloud began to head towards the UK.
