If you didn’t know who was speaking, you might think the use of the term “festering sore” to describe another country was Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, going on one of his regular rants about the U.S. or Israel.

But this time Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid turned the tables (in a way), dishing the derogatory slang right back at Tehran.

“Iran is a festering sore in the world,” said Reid, Nevada Democrat, when asked when Congress will pass sanctions that are currently being worked on by House and Senate negotiators.

Reid said the conference committee would hold its first meeting today and that “as soon as they get it out I’ll do everything within my power to move it to the floor.”

He also sounded a hawkish note about the world’s efforts to stop Tehran from gaining a nuclear weapon.

“In my opinion we have waited long enough for the diplomacy to work,” Reid said.
