Dustin Shuler — the artist who brought worldwide attention to Berwyn with a sculpture of skewered automobiles dubbed the Spindle — has died, his wife said today.

The Spindle was immortalized in the film “Wayne’s World” and drew acclaim — and disdain — for its towering presence in the shopping plaza at Harlem and Cermak in the suburb west of Chicago.

The 50-foot-high sculpture was topped by a 1967 red VW Beetle.

It went up in 1989 and was soon written up in travel guides on oddball roadside attractions.
