Chicago Police today acknowledged that an off-duty Cook County sheriff’s correctional officer stood in an alley Saturday morning as a CVS store employee fatally choked a shoplifter.

Anthony Kyser, a 35-year-old unemployed barber, was strangled after stealing toothpaste and crayons from a CVS in Little Village on the Southwest Side, officials said.

But police and eyewitness accounts differ on what exactly the correctional officer did or didn’t do.

On Sunday, Chicago Police said they were unaware of any off-duty officer being present during the incident. But today, Lt. Maureen Biggane said the off-duty officer called 911 from the scene and identified herself.
