Only 35 House Democrats voted for a similar budget-cutting measure in 2006

President Obama wants a new procedure for cutting federal spending. But his own party voted overwhelmingly against a similar procedure four years ago.

A similar proposal by former Republican Senate majority leader Bill Frist and Rep. Paul Ryan, top Republican on the House Budget Committee, passed the House in 2006 but received only 35 votes from Democrats there, while 156 opposed it. The measure never got a vote in the Senate.
