Queen’s Speech: David Cameron unveils first legislative programme as PM

Nick Clegg’s hopes of radical electoral reform moved a step closer today as plans for a referendum to change the voting system were outlined in the Queen’s Speech.

The address included proposals for a Bill on electoral reform, which will give the public the right to decide whether the First-Past-The-Post system should be ditched in favour of the Alternative Vote.

It was one of 22 Bills and one Draft Bill in today’s speech, which laid out a 500-day ‘power to the people’ legislative programme for the new coalition government.

Their joint programme, hammered out since they took office just two weeks ago, outlines plans to allow people to run their own schools and to row back the state that mushroomed under Labour.
