ALBANY – A federal judge Friday barred Gov. David A. Paterson from furloughing 100,000 unionized state employees to help close the budget deficit.

U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence E. Kahn also ordered that the 4-percent raise due to some of the workers since April 1 be paid.

Paterson had no immediate reaction, but previously has raised the specter of layoffs if the judge nixed furloughs.
