Nicklaus says tumultuous offseason won’t keep Tiger Woods from passing his record

DUBLIN, Ohio — There are times, Jack Nicklaus admits now, where he feels a pang or two of regret that he hadn’t spent a few more years to put some extra distance between himself and the unseen record-challenger that became Tiger Woods.

Then he remembers why he didn’t — and why it won’t bother him should the day arrive that Woods captures his 19th major championship.

And, yes, Nicklaus still believes that day will come even with the maelstrom that has permeated the past six months of Woods’ life.

“I don’t think my feeling has changed,” said Nicklaus, who plays tournament host this week as Woods, Phil Mickelson and the rest of the PGA Tour drop in for the Memorial Tournament.
