EU beating gas emission targets

European Union countries are already more than halfway towards meeting the bloc’s self-imposed greenhouse gas emissions targets for 2020, a new report has found.

The European Environment Agency said on Wednesday that decreases in emissions were accelerating, in part because of the recession.

By the end of 2008, emissions from the 27 member states were 11.3 per cent below 1990 levels.

Emissions were falling at a rate of about 2 per cent a year, the EEA said, putting the bloc on course to exceed its stated target of cutting greenhouse gases by 20 per c
