A video of Rep. Bob Etheridge’s (D-NC) altercation with two camera-wielding students went viral today.

In the video, Etheridge is approached by two self-identified students on a Washington, DC sidewalk and is asked if he supports the “Obama agenda.” The Congressman demands the students’ names, pulls one student into a headlock and hits the camera.

In a press conference Monday afternoon, Etheridge apologized for his behavior and “poor response” to the situation.

“I have seen the video posted on several blogs,” Etheridge said. “I deeply and profoundly regret my reaction and I apologize to all involved. Throughout my many years of service to the people of North Carolina, I have always tried to treat people from all viewpoints with respect. No matter how intrusive and partisan our politics can become, this does not justify a poor response. I have and I will always work to promote a civil public discourse.”
