Cupcakes take over DC

Hello Cupcake recently hosted the “Design Your DC Cupcake Challenge.” The participants created cupcakes that reflected their city inspiration.

Metrocurean reports that memorable designs included a metro map, DC as the 51st state, Larry Craig’s “wide stance,” and Michelle Obama’s vegetable garden. But the winner was this creative “lo mein cupcake,” inspired by Chinatown.

Strasburger strikeout

In the week since Stephen Strasburg’s Nationals debut, “Strasburgers” have been popping up on D.C. menus everywhere. According to The Washington Post, The Burger Joint will offer their “Strasburger” through the end of June. It’s a hot dog atop a burger with Vermont cheddar, which represents his rise to baseball stardom. Glory Days, Tortilla Coast, Ebbitt Express, and Loeb’s Deli downtown are also offering dishes named after the baseball star.

World Cup fever

Finally, in case cupcakes and “Strasburgers” aren’t filling enough, Food and Family offers some baking recipes from South Africa to help fans feel closer to all the World Cup excitement. The blog includes recipes for Malva pudding, South African buttermilk rusk, and South African crunchies.
