By day, Maddox is a carpenter in Medford, Oregon. But when work’s done, he trades his chisels and planes for grinders and TIG welders. It’s something he’s been doing for years: Maddox retrofitted a friend’s car with a DIY propulsion system. He built a pulse-jet bicycle that hit 73 mph. Now he has sketched out a design for a quad-jet aircraft he hopes will carry him almost 5 miles into the heavens.
