Alvin Greene rose from anonymity to celebrity when he won the Democratic nomination for South Carolina’s contested U.S. Senate seat last week.

Greene, an unemployed veteran who is facing felony charges for showing pornography to a college student, did little campaigning or fundraising. Greene’s candidacy has stirred a national brouhaha, with his former opponent demanding an investigation of the election results and House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-NC) suggesting that Greene may be a Republican plant.

While Greene’s rise to the national spotlight is new, he joins a long line of unexpected — and sometimes ridiculous — candidates for public office.
