Wimbledon king Roger Federer was primed for action on Monday as the gates opened for the 124th edition of the world’s most famous tennis tournament.

Federer, bidding to equal Pete Sampras’s modern era record of seven singles titles at the All England Club, was scheduled to begin the two-week festival of sport on Centre Court against Colombia’s Alejandro Falla.

Clouds rolled in to take the edge off soaring temperatures in the leafy suburb of south west London but warm sunshine was forecast for much of the opening week which will see more than 40,000 fans flock daily to the pristine lawns.
