HOUSTON — A racially insensitive e-mail meant as joke is not getting many laughs from local lawmakers, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

The e-mail was circulated through NASA’s computer network allegedly by someone identified as a NASA contract employee.

The electronic signature showed the e-mail was received and then passed along by a supervisor working on NASA’s Webb Space telescope project at the Johnson Space Center.

The e-mail offered a look inside the White House walk-in refrigerator and then showed a picture of a room filled with watermelons.

“Oh, shut up and lighten up,” the e-mail read. “I know you’re laughing.”

“The joke wasn’t at all funny,” said Mike Sullivan, a Houston city councilman.
