When the NAACP passed this week a resolution asking for the repudiation of “racist” Tea Party leaders — something grassroots Tea Party activists vehemently denied and decried as unfair — interest in joining up with the Tea Party only increased, according to one leader.

“Every time folks on the left attack us, the movement grows,” said Mark Meckler, a leader of the national Tea Party Patriots organization. “It’s a no-win situation for the left.”

Meckler said the Tea Party Patriots organization added 50 local chapters to its organization over the last week. He said about 2,300 chapters exist nationwide.

“To me, the Tea Party is alive and well,” he said. “We’re having an influence on the debate.”

The NAACP could not immediately be reached for comment.
