Romanoff attacks Bennet-led school pension ‘deal’

Andrew Romanoff’s campaign Friday tried to capitalize on a front-page New York Times report examining a complex financial deal conducted when Sen. Michael Bennet headed Denver schools. The campaign worked overtime on a new TV ad and conducted media interviews all day.

“Big Casino Bet Gone Bad” is the theme of the Romanoff ad released on the cusp of Tuesday’s Democratic Senate primary.

Using the Times report as its primary source, the ad says Bennet, as superintendent of Denver Public Schools, cut an “exotic deal with Wall Street” that cost Denver schools “$25 million, and counting.”

Bennet released a statement asserting that the Times piece “just got it wrong” and that the Romanoff campaign is “repeatedly trying to score points at the expense of kids and (has) once again disregarded the facts.”
