Nearly half of Department of Education’s district offices fail to answer phone calls during week before start of school

During the most anxious week for parents enrolling their kids in the public-school system, city Department of Education workers assigned to help them navigate the complex bureaucracy failed to respond to phone calls nearly half the time, a Post probe has found.

With the academic year starting this Wednesday, family advocates at 16 out of the 34 school-district offices did not answer their phones or return messages left on voice mail when called last week by Post reporters posing as puzzled parents.

Fourteen offices — five in Brooklyn, four in The Bronx, two each in Manhattan and Queens and Staten Island’s only office — did not respond to two messages left over four days.
