Republican Meg Whitman’s post-convention bounce appears to be over, and she and Democrat Jerry Brown are once again running a close contest for governor of California.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely California Voters, including leaners, shows Whitman earning 48% support, while Brown captures 45% of the vote. Three percent (3%) like some other candidate in the race, and four percent (4%) are undecided.

Two weeks ago, just after the state’s Republican Convention, Whitman held a 51% to 43% lead over Brown when leaners were included in the totals. Leaners are those who initially indicate no preference for either of the candidates but answer a follow-up question and say they are leaning towards a particular candidate. From this point forward, Rasmussen Reports considers results with leaners the primary indicator of the race.
