MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Former President George W. Bush says the fact he wrote a memoir may come as a shock to some of those who were critical of his decisions in the White House.

Bush joked to an audience at a university fundraiser that “they didn’t think I could read a book, much less write one.” The former president, speaking Thursday at the University of Mobile in Alabama, struck a lighter tone at times while also reflecting on his time in office.

The Press-Register of Mobile reports Bush also defended his decision to invade Iraq, saying he was motivated by his belief that freedom could transform Iraq and other nations.

However, Bush also said he does not miss being in the media, adding: “Eight years is enough of that.”
