President Obama led the Democrats’ coordinated attack against the U.S. Chamber of Commerce yesterday, using unsubstantiated charges of “foreign money” being poured into American campaigns to warn of the grave “threat to Democracy” we face.
But the president, in his heart of hearts, may not find the Chamber so terrifying. Four days after the Nov. 2 election he plans to attend an event in Mumbai, India sponsored by the Chamber.
According to an invitation for the event, the president will be attending a “U.S.-India Business & Entrepreneurship Summit” on Nov. 6 hosted by the U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC), an affiliate organization to the Chamber whose offices are housed at the Chamber’s headquarters.
With Democrats ramping up their attacks on “foreign” money and businesses outsourcing to “foreigners,” Obama’s trip could create undercut the message, especially since India is one of the top hubs of outsourcing worldwide.
Thankfully for vulnerable Democrats, the trip will occur after election day.
David Chavern, the Chamber’s Chief Operating Officer, said the President’s planned event “clearly indicates how off base these accusations about foreign money and politics are.”
Chavern said the USIBC “has never gotten involved in U.S. politics and never will and everyone knows that.”
“For anyone to characterize this as a ‘scary foreign organization’ is not only wrong, it’s irresponsible,” Chavern said.
The White House did not reply to a request for comment by press time.
