In response to parents’ concerns that the language inviting students to say the Pledge of Allegiance at one Poway Unified school encouraged nonparticipation, the district announced at a board meeting Monday night that it will use a uniform invitation for all schools districtwide.

The new introduction to the Pledge of Allegiance will say, “You are now

invited to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Ready, begin.”

Earlier this year at Twin Peaks Middle School, the introduction said, “It is now time for the Pledge of Allegiance. For those who wish to participate, please stand; all others, please stand or sit quietly.”

Following an outcry from parents, many of whom said notification sent out at the beginning of the year was sufficient to inform parents and students that they could abstain from the pledge, the district changed the invitation for the school.
