AURORA — The three men vying to become Colorado’s next governor spent much of an hour-long debate Wednesday on illegal immigration, as American Constitution Party candidate Tom Tancredo kept attacking Democrat John Hickenlooper for presiding over a “sanctuary city.”

The charge irritated Hickenlooper, who said Denver has never given safe harbor to illegal immigrants during his seven years as mayor. Rather than fight back, Hickenlooper instead chose to talk mainly about his record as mayor and how he hoped to govern.

Meanwhile, Republican Dan Maes urged voters to give him a chance, noting he has waged an uphill campaign for 21 months. At one point, when Maes insisted that parts of his background that have been questioned are true, snickers could be heard throughout the auditorium on the Anschutz Medical Campus, where the debate was held.
