Republican Mark Kirk has edged ahead in the race for President Obama’s former Senate seat.

The latest Rasmussen poll shows Kirk leading the race for Illinois Senate by four points, with 44 percent of the vote to Democrat Alexi Giannoulias’s 40. This is a switch from the poll conducted last week that had Giannoulias leading by one.

Of the remaining voters, the poll says 4 percent are voting for the Green Party candidate LeAlan Jones, 8 percent are voting for “some other candidate” and 5 percent are undecided.

That 5 percent could have a significant effect on the race, since neither candidate has held more than a 4 percent lead since August.
