Senator John Cornyn said Senate Republicans next year would extend their hand across the aisle … and try to pull Democrats and Independent Joe Lieberman over to their side.

It is unclear if the Republican wave will be large enough to wrest the Senate from the Democrats but the GOP is certain to make significant gains in the upper chamber that will move them closer to a majority. If they fail to gain control at the polls today, Cornyn, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, indicated that the Senate GOP would welcome with open arms any Democrats wanting to switch sides.

“We would certainly welcome [Lieberman] or any other Democrat who wants to switch sides of the aisles and caucus with us,” Cornyn told Fox News.

Asked specifically about Lieberman, Cornyn called the Connecticut senator a “great patriot.”

“He’s certainly a hawk on national security matters,” Cornyn noted. “I think he votes like Republicans in those areas.”

The NRSC chairman did not name names with regard to which Democrats the GOP would try to convince to switch sides.

“I think after this election, we’re going to have to look and see who is left,” he said. “Because I think there are going to be a lot of people who aren’t coming back.”
