WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — President Barack Obama says the United States now faces a new “Sputnik moment” and must respond with a new American vigor to global competition.

Speaking at a community college, Obama recalled the Soviet launch of the first satellite in 1957 and the U.S. response that put the country in the forefront of technology development.

He said the most important competition for America today is not between Democrats and Republicans but with other nations.
