The gay conservative group GOProud weighed in Monday on who the new chairman of the Republican National Committee should be — or at least who it should not be. GOProud has joined the growing movement of Republicans who are urging committee members to vote for “anyone but Michael Steele.”

“For conservatives, and anyone else who cares about the future of the Republican Party, this vote should be an easy one – anyone but Michael Steele,” said Chris Barron, chairman of the GOProud board in a statement released Monday.

Barron went so far as to deny the RNC credit for Republican wins in the November elections.

“Michael Steele’s tenure as Chairman can only fairly be characterized as an unmitigated disaster,” he said. “Were it not for the hard work of outside groups, who were forced to step in to fill the void left by an ineffective RNC, success at the ballot box in November would never have occurred.”

“We need an RNC Chair who understands that his or her role is to raise money and build party infrastructure,” continued Barron, “not to sell books, hire friends and family, and pontificate on policy.”

GOProud’s statement echoes the sentiments of some members of the RNC, some of whom have reportedly started an “Anybody but Steele” campaign.
