Stocks rise; Dow sees best January since ’97 Market Snapshot

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — U.S. stocks rose Monday, helping lift the Dow to its best January in 14 years, as investors took upheaval in Egypt in stride and Exxon Mobil Corp.’s results blew past expectations.

“Overall, given what is going on in Egypt, it’s rather encouraging the market is holding up as well as it is,” said David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds.

However, “we shouldn’t always assume the market reacts in a logical way to the daily news flow,” said Kelly. Recent data showed mutual-fund investors continuing to pull money out of bond funds and into equities in January, he noted.
