In an effort to “protect young Harps shoppers,” Harps Supermarket in Mountain View, Arkansas, shielded a January issue of Us Weekly that shows a photo of Elton John, his boyfriend, and baby for the cover story.
GLAAD reported on Jan. 26 that Harps Corporate Executive Assistant Marty Yarborough said the company’s concealment of the magazine cover reflects “in no way [their] opinion on this issue…[they] do not have an opinion on this issue.” Yarborough added that all Harps stores have magazine shields, which are only used when customers complain, and “several” customers voiced opposition to this particular magazine cover.
Harps said they only busted out the magazine shields at one store location. According to GLAAD and a statement from Harps, Harps removed the shield on Jan. 26.
