The Kelso School Board on Monday approved a new cell phone policy that allows school administrators to search a student’s phone if they suspect it contains sexually explicit pictures or messages.

The policy, which passed after a brief discussion, also specifies when students may use cell phones on school grounds. It gives individual schools the leeway to set stricter rules.

The policy aims to crack down on student “sexting” – sending or viewing sexually explicit pictures or messages on a cell phone. Under the new guidelines, principals or vice principals may confiscate and search a student’s cell phone if there is “reasonable cause” to suspect that sexting is taking place during and at school, said Scott Westlund, the district’s education assessment coordinator.
