Greencastle Elementary School teacher Susan Lee Burke has been charged with punching, scratching, kicking, and choking her first grade students, reports CBS News.
The Silver Spring, MD teacher allegedly assaulted nine children between the ages of six and seven in her first grade class. One first grade boy reported the attack back in January, detectives said. After learning of this report, the detectives interviewed the entire class and learned eight other students said they’d been hit by Burke.
When the allegations surfaced, Burke was immediately removed from class and placed on administrative leave, reports CBS affiliate WUSA.
Burke’s neighbors told 9NEWS NOW on Tuesday that they weren’t surprised to hear about her arrest, adding that police had been called to her house several times for domestic disturbances.
Burke is being held in Montgomery County Jail on nine counts of second-degree assault on a minor. Police say the investigation continues.
