Quality romantic comedies are few and far between, and critics often take jabs at them. But when Valentine’s Day rolls around, it’s important to appreciate these movies for what they are: sweet, light and fun.

“Adventureland” wouldn’t win an Academy Award, but it’s to be commended for promoting nerd love and embracing the awkward mannerisms of Jesse Eisenberg, who went on to star in “The Social Network,” which is expected to dominate the upcoming Oscars ceremony. “The Wedding Date” has its share of cliches, including a lonely woman who maintains a “poor me” mentality years after her boyfriend dumps her, but the movie also has excellent on-screen chemistry between Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney. “Shopgirl” presents the emotional bulldozing world of unrequited love.
