Over the years, the Academy has honored many films that recognize societal and political issues. Brokeback Mountain, which earned Ang Lee the 2005 Oscar for Best Director, tells the story of two gay cowboys who regretfully veil their sexuality. Inglourious Basterds, for which Christoph Waltz took home Best Actor in a Supporting Role last year, is a film that many wish was historically accurate because it depicts violence against Nazis.
