Ariz. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who sustained severe injuries from being shot in the head on Jan. 8 in Tucson, sent astronaut husband Mark Kelly and his twin brother Scott Kelly a public tweet Monday wishing them a happy birthday.

“Happy Birthday @ShuttleCDRKelly & @StationCDRKelly! Thanks for the cake @houstonhospital,” Giffords tweetedlinking to a Facebook photo of her husband’s picture on a cake.

Giffords published a more detailed message to her husband, brother-in-law, and TIRR Memorial Hermann hospital on her Facebook page, “Happy Birthday Mark and Scott! Thanks for the cake TIRR. Scott, we hope you get something yummy up there today!”

The wounded congresswoman has been in the hospital since being shot by 22-year-old suspect Jared Loughner at last month’s “Congress On Your Corner” event, but has seen major improvements. According to the Daily Mail, the 40-year-old Tucson native can eat sushi and laugh and respond to jokes. When asked how she was doing, Giffords reportedly said, “I’m better.” Prior to these advancements, Giffords requested toast for breakfast on Feb. 9, mouthed the words to songs, scrolled through an iPad, stood up, and walked outside.
