China Scraps Death Penalty for 13 Crimes

China has revised its Criminal Law to eliminate the death penalty for 13 non-violent economic crimes.

The official Xinhua news agency said the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress passed the amendment to the Criminal Law Friday at its bi-monthly session.

Xinhua said the amendment also prohibits the death penalty for people aged 75 or older at the time of trial, except if they commit a murder with exceptional cruelty.
