WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. John McCain is renewing his call for imposition of a no-fly zone over Libya, saying he doesn’t believe that would lead inevitably to U.S. troops on the ground.

The Republican tells CBS television he understands weariness at home over U.S. military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. But McCain says the American people “are not prepared to watch … one of the two or three worst despots in the world sit and slaughter innocent civilians.”

McCain says “I don’t think we should end up on the ground. I think it would be counterproductive for us to send in ground forces.” He says that a no-fly zone is needed because Gadhafi has been able to use his air power to hold sway in Libya against untrained troops.
