Heartbreak can be debilitating, and perhaps it explains why Daily Beast columnist Meghan McCain canceled a speaking engagement at Juniata College.

McCain, who bailed on the scheduled gig last September, cited “several unforeseen professional responsibilities” as justifications for ditching the event at the time. The 26-year old immediately announced on Twitter that she was heading to Las Vegas, leading many to believe she flaked on Juniata to booze it up in Sin City.

That may not have been the case, at least according to McCain’s Tuesday Daily Beast column in which she claims she skipped the speaking engagement in the aftermath of being dumped.

“Last September, my boyfriend broke up with me over a five-line email,” McCain wrote. “I had a speaking engagement at Juniata College, but that would have to wait. I cancelled [sic] the speech and fled to Vegas for a girl’s weekend.”

The daughter of Ariz. Sen. John McCain, Meghan became the victim of media criticism for blowing off Juanita College.

“I was at the blackjack table at the Bellagio when one of my girlfriends told me the Internet was going crazy,” McCain wrote. “What now? ‘Meghan McCain Blows Off Book Tour to Party in Vegas,’ declared Gawker. The Chronicle of Higher Education weighed in with, ‘What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas — unless you’re arrogant enough to post it to your Twitter feed.’ It wasn’t so much that I had cancelled [sic] a speaking engagement. It was that I was in Vegas instead.”
