Branstad will sign redistricting plan into law

The first redistricting map will become law. “I intend to sign it,” Republican Gov. Terry Branstad said this morning on the “Iowa Press” public television show.

The map, crafted by nonpartisan state staffers, draws new boundaries for legislative and congressional districts. Iowa will lose one of its five congressional districts because of a higher rate of growth in other states.

“I think all four of the districts, frankly, are competitive,” Branstad said. Branstad said he talked with all five of the congressmen – two Republicans and three Democrats.

Branstad didn’t predict who would win the race between popular incumbents Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Latham and Democratic U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell, who will wind up living in the same district.
